US Army, how to do taxes?

I've been in the army for a grand total of 4 months now and it is my first real job. I've never done taxes before. I can reach my w2 form through mypay, but I don't have a clue what to do from there.

I remember a friend recommending me to use turbotax. Another friend said I don't really need to file taxes since my total income for the last year was really low. Like I said, I don't know where to start

You definitely want to file. You will probably get money back. Taxes are withheld from each of your pay checks. At the end of the year most people have had too much withheld and so they get a refund when they file.

Just go to TurboTax.com and select the Federal Free edition. It won't cost you anything and is very easy to fill out. You have to do it by midnight tonight or else you will be late.

what about state taxes? Did you work in a state that collects income tax? Some people in some states have to file a seperate state income tax.

You can usually get help through the military and various non-profit organizations. FYI today is the deadline so you need to get it in gear and at very least file an extension.

Barring that, you can also use TurboTax, TaxAct, or a variety of other online programs to file your FEDERAL return for free; there may, however, be a small fee to file states. For you, doing the return is VERY easy; you have your W-2 from the DoD, and that's it. Everything will probably be standard, so it ends up being very, very straightforward. Unfortunately, a lot of tax literature meant for the public is still written in incomprehensible legalese, so it looks more intimidating than it actually is.

You don't need to file at all unless there was income tax withheld from any 2015 salary payment and you want it back. You can download IRS Form 1040-EZ and the instructions and figure it out on paper. Turbo tax that you buy has an interview function that asks you all the right questions. The on line version may have that too.

If you made less than $10,300 and were not a dependent on your parents' return you do not have to file. If there is a number in box 2 or box 17, you would have to file a return to get that refunded.

yours should not be a hard one, go to www.irs.gov and find free efile, choose one of those options and start following instructions, most of whichwill be from your W-2, assuming that this income from the Army

and your Sgt should have informed you a long time ago that there are people on your base to help you with this

It sounds like you don't need to file but if they took money out for taxes (look at the W2) you would get the Federal Withholding back by filing. The FICA etc is gone.
