Is there anywhere where I can find an American made road bike that doesn't cost a small fortune?

Update:

Is there anywhere where I can purchase an American made road bicycle without spending a small fortune?

Are we back to "No bike should cost more than $300?" There are a few domestic bike frame makers. Nobody domestic can compete with the Chinese, who pay their workers much less, and have fewer costly government regulations, such as EPA rules. They survive as small, niche builders. Everyone knows about Waterford, but there are smaller makers everywhere. In Flint Michigan there's Assenmacher. They're all going to cost you, though, because they're made by hand, one or two at a time.

The entire bicycle? No. Remember these two words... "Global Economy" Manufacturers will build & ship from the most 'cost effective' place on earth they can find.

Let's say you found a frame made in the USA. Where will the rest of the parts & components come from? SRAM is an American based company but with factories everywhere from the greater Chicago area to China. Continental Gatorskin tires are made in Germany - and they are VERY GOOD & durable tires. But their tubes are not made in Germany.

China produces both some very good stuff & some very poor stuff. You want quality? You're gonna have to PAY FOR IT - no matter where it's made. Global Economy

  • Yes. Norco and Brodie Bicycles make their frames in-house both North American companies out of Canada. Brodie teaches how to make bicycle frames at the University of Frazier, Vancouver British Columbia.

"Paul Brodie became well known for more than 4,000 award-winning bicycle frames produced by his company, Brodie Research and Technology Inc. Paul now teaches those same frame-building skills at UFV, skills that have helped set his bikes apart. Come have the experience of a lifetime, designing and building your own bike frame with legendary Paul Brodie."

Prices are competitive, these bikes are priced right along the lines of Specialized, Trek, Cannondale etc.

Check out link below. Bikes are made in Detroit Michigan.

Another is Shinola, also in Michigan.

What's a 'small fortune' to you? Give a dollar amount.

You can still find frames alone made in America. But what about other parts like shifters & derailleurs & tires? Waterford makes frames & forks in the USA. But you might faint when you see the prices.

Get a pre 2011 cannondale road bike. Cannondale ended US production marking the 2011 production year.

I have an old Cdale, it has the US flag and Made in the USA (well, the frame) on the seat tube.

Used bikes. Any bike that's decent quality is going to be expensive, no matter where it is made. However, with high wages in the US, the production costs are going to be much higher so the price they need to sell them is going to be higher compared to foreign made bikes with much lower production costs.
