I have had a stiff neck with pain at the base of the skull?

Update:

and along the shoulder for approximately 6 months. during this period I have seen 4 different doctors who say it is caused by a trapezius muscle trigger point , surely pain shouldn't persist for this long, im worried its something mre sinister

    You either have a pinched nerve or something worse like Meningitis. So go to the doctor as soon as possible.

    If it persists, you should a see a chiropractor. Just keep it still for few days and maybe apply ice.
