Why does my dog always grunt?

He is constantly grunting. When i come home, when he stretches, when i pet him, even when i baby talk him and ask him questions like "Do you wanna go to preschool?"

Update:

Hes in good health and he's 3. German shepherd, male.

    Old age?, doesn't bark as a normal dog does so instead of barking, whining or other noises grunting may be his thing to acknowledge your talking to him or are within earshot.
