I currently have an iPhone 6 and a GoPro Hero 4 Black. Should I get a DSLR?

I currently have an iPhone 6 and a GoPro Hero 4 Black. I m about to go on a month long road trip with my friends to see many of the United States national parks. I m considering getting a DSLR.

I actually just purchased a Canon 80D online for a good price, but it is still quite expensive so if the iPhone and GoPro will be enough, I might cancel the order to save the money and just use those 2 to for photography/videography of the trip.

What is your opinion? Is the money worth it to get a DSLR? Any advice would be great.

The Canon 80D kitted with the 18-135mm STM lens is a versatile travel combo. Still, it is a bit heavy.

The Canon G3x is a good balance of quality, capability, and compactness.

A camera that is less ambitious in weight and price, but still a significant step up from a cell phone camera is the Canon G16. It's 1/1.7" sensor is smaller than the DSLR's or the 1" sensor super premium compacts, but much better than a phone or typical bridge camera.

I suppose it depends on your goals. If you feel artistic and want high quality and control over exposure and focus, then you'll love the DSLR. But they're big and fiddly and a road trip may not be the time to test your friends' patience while you lug it around and learn how to use it.

The phone and GoPro are probably going to be good enough, and they're more fun-compatible because they'll fit in your pockets and be with you everywhere.

Do you know how to use a fully adjustable DSLR? No? Then buy a mid level point and shoot. It will produce better photos than what you have now, and you won't be frustrated trying to learn how to use a camera while on your trip.

Used correctly and with an eye for a good photo, the Canon 80D will knock spots of the other two tiny sensor cameras. It is dynamic range that wins, loads more shades of grey between saturated black and burnt out white. Edge handling is a lot better too. Still take your Gopro if you are doing exteme action and want to shoot from within it.

The DSLR, regardless what it is, will have the better image quality, and provide you with the most creative capabilities. I would HIGHLY encourage you to also get a lens with Image Stablizaiton which will allow you to shoot in lower light, hand held without a tripod. It's also going to allow you to shoot at lower ISOs so you get much less noise and much better color and contrast.

You already purchased a great camera. Keep it. The dSLR, the GoPro and the iPhone all have different uses. You will need them all.
