Is a $1300 cello too expensive?

I'm about to start cello lessons (I hope, still looking for a teacher). I've never played before, but I'm very dedicated to music (I play piano, guitar, and drums). I found a cello in my local violin shop that's supposedly all hand made, has ebony everything, nice wood (can't remember I'm sorry lol) and everything like that. So let's just say this cello is pretty solid, is $1300 too much? It's a lot of money to drop on an instrument I'm just starting.

Considering anything lower than around $850 is probably junk, $1300 is in no way too high. A hand made cello takes at least 200 hours to make and the materials cost at least a few hundred (the materials for one of my cello's costs over $1000). You do the math.

no. the cheapest functional cellos are around $700, so $1300 is a nicer beginners instrument.

but yes, it is a lot of money. consider renting for a while instead.

    Too expensive for what?

That's a typical price for a good beginner cello.

For a beginners cello, no. For an intermediate cello it's most likely too expensive (mine was 2800)

Learning how to play an instrument is like education or travel, money well spent.

It also comes with a nice bow and soft case

If money is a problem, go electric. Much cheaper and you won't annoy the neighbors/family/pets when you practice.
