Why would someone visit Puerto Rico in 1917 ?
Doing some family research and found out my great aunt (who was quiet wealthy) arrived in Puerto Rico in 1917. She was American, never married and frankly, can t quite figure out what the appeal of Puerto Rico would have been in that era for a 28 year old New England spinster..
Was it a tourist destination for the wealthy ?
Any thoughts ?

Beaches, lovely weather, and cheap prices.
Cuba was a major tourist site for Americans in that era and later, and there are even movies set in Cuba about the high life among people from the US. Puerto Rico was a little less popular, but had the same attractions.
Calling a 28 year old woman a "spinster" is a little outdated, don't you think? That's about the average age for women to marry these days.
