depression / self insult?

I have a really close friend who has depression issues and frequently cuts himself down (calls himself things like loser, f*** up, retard, etc). Whenever he does it makes my heart sad and I tell him to quit cutting himself down, even playfully threaten to take him to Taco Bell (which he hates), push him to say something nice about himself, and even correct him. On one hand I think he s just repeating the crap that was programmed into him as a child but on the other I m concerned for him.

Should I just let him continue to self depricate or am I right to encourage him to stop insulting himself?

You should certainly encourage him to stop insulting himself. This constant negativity can have a strong impact on his life and can lead him to make severely wrong decisions. Be a good friend and keep encouraging him to be positive, if needed get him help. Thank you for being such a nice friend.

Keep up trying to stop him. His behavior described here suggests he needs to get a mental evaluation and prescribed an antidepressant. Keep trying to make him feel better along with getting him at least into a therapy session.
