When I tried to play some videos saved in my computer it does not play. Even I tried via VLC player it did not open. Why?

The message comes up to say;

"Windows media player cannot play the file.The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file"

Thanks for your help

    That message only applies to Media Player. What error do you get from vlc.

    you might need to download additional codecs to play the video, it must be in a weird/unusual format
