hydrogen is just a fuel. you can mix it with oxygen, apply a spark, and get a very energetic explosion and producing water. as such it can be used very much in the same way as gasoline. you can run a standard internal combustion engine, with some modifications, to run off hydrogen
you can also use it in a fuel cell, which is a solid state device that combines hydrogen and oxygen in a more controlled way, producing electricity, and then run an electric car off the electricity

Some hydrogen can be injected at the air filter of most any internal combustion motor, making it a hybrid. Advantages are all doubtful.
The hydrogen can be supplied to a fuel cell which makes electricity, but not enough for rapid acceleration. Solutions are costly, reduce reliability and make it difficult to find qualified repair mechanics. Worse, realistic projections keep hydrogen more than twice as costly as gasoline.
