army, to retire at 20 years or at 6 years?

Are there any military benefits for someone who retires at the end of his first contract? I haven't made my mind yet on this issue and would like to know.

My MOS is one that has skills that carry into the civilian world with very high paying jobs. Would you stay in the army if there was opportunities to earn 3-4 times more out in the civ world? I love my time in service so far, but I'm not entirely sure about my future.

You don't retire at the end of your contract. You just leave, unless you managed to get a medical retirement.

All you get at the end of 6 years is your TSP, if you contributed to it and VA benefits like home loan guarantees and the GI Bill. Under the new retirement system, that is also all you'll get, except that the military will also kick in some money to TSP.

You cannot retire until you have accumulated 20 years of service.

You do not retire after 6 years you are just choosing not to re-enlist/re-commission. You get the GI Bill and nothing else unless it is determined by the VA you have some medical conditions.

anyone who just gets out at 6 years does NOT retire. you will retain any VA benefits you are entitled to such as the GI Bill and the VA loan Guarantee. you DO NOT retain retirement benefits such as a pension or access to base or Tricare.

You do not "retire" after one enlistment. You merely separate.
