To prevent future errors it's often best to use the same make and brand

Depends on the motherboard really, som have real problems with mixed ram, due to mixed timings and access methods.
Other boards tend to be ok with it. However, mixing ram often causes the "dual channel" mode to revert to single channel ram access, thus slowing down overall ram access speeds. You may not see the difference, but it is there...
