How can I open a laptop of a relative who has passed away without the password?

    Depending on what version of Windows it is (or Linux), there are ways to reset the administrator password (but not look up the old password). Resetting the password then allows you to log in.

    Search the Internet for "Windows password reset". For Linux, there is a way to modify the password file to make it prompt the user (root) for a new one - this requires a boot CD with some form of Linux on it....

    If you just need to get files off that machine, remove the HDD and install it in another machine (or external drive enclosure). Then, copy the files.

    You might need to call a data recovery service, especially if the hard drive is encrypted.
