Why wont my drag on my spinning reel tighten suddenly?

I have a pretty old Shakespeare cirrus reel that suddenly just stopped working. I've used braided line on it for the past few years, can't verify whether or not I have mono/fluoro on it for a few yards before the braid is on (it's at home in writing this at work) I've read that not having it on there may cause the issue but I highly doubt that's the reason. I can't reel it in because the drag went catch when I try to tighten it it's like the threads don't catch so I can turn it and turn it non stop forever and it won't ever tighten. With the spool off I have been able to tighten it. It's almost like the main shaft has worn down. Remember it is old and that reel hasn't been taken care if the greatest because I had gotten it when I first started fishing. Maybe it's just old but anyone have any idea what's wrong and if it's fixable?

If you're one that leaves the drag tightened all of the time, then you more than likely have flattened out the drag washer to the point it will no longer give any resistance when the drag knob is cranked down, but as Swamp has said, it very well could be that you did not use any mono backing or any tape before putting on your super braided line to keep it from moving on the spool because super braid is very slick. The mono backing method is just putting a little mono on the spool to have it bite into the spool, then you tie the super braid to the mono backing and the tape method, well you use electrical tape by putting it on the arbor of the spool to give the super braid something to bite into, which you do your knot, then put it onto the spool, then tighten it until you cannot move it anymore then start to put the line on by winding it on. But, if you had a sporting goods store put your line on, then they could have not put the line on right.

I think maybe it has gone the way of good old reels. Put it out to pasture and buy another.
