Will installing Linux on my Windows 7 laptop completely remove windows?

I have a refurbished lap top that came installed with windows 7. I think the O/S might be an illegitimate copy as every time I boot I get a message about it. Because it's a refurbished laptop bought over the internet not sure if I can reinstall a fresh version of windows or install Linux

When you Boot off of the Linux CD it will ask you if you want to Install Linux or Try It.

If you select TRY IT all that will happen is that Linux will load into Memory and not the Hard Drive (Live CD).

if you choose to install it, Linux will ask you if you want to keep Windows or Remove it.

If you pick remove it, the Hard Drive will be reformatted and linux installed.

At least this is the way UBUNTU and ZORIN work.

You have a choice. If you want to keep Windows, it is best to first shrink Windows with it its own Disk Management (in Administrative Tools) to make room for Linux. Then make sure that you reboot Windows once, so it can check the disk and make sure everything is in order. Then install Linux on the unallocated space.

I dual boot Win7 or Linux from same drive on my PC. For my laptop with Win7 on hard drive I have Linux on a separate mSATA SSD card. And for my tablet PC which has Win7 Pro on tiny internal 32 GB SSD, I boot Linux from SD card.
