Why does the US government allow people to display confederate flags?

People using this flag actively rebelled against their government 150 years ago. If it was up to me every traitor family with a confederate flag would be dragged out onto the street and shot on live tv

Our constitution requires that we permit freedom of expression even when we don't agree with what is being expressed. What we are not required to do is allow the Confederate flag to be displayed in public space the upkeep of which depends on the taxes of many who disapprove of flying the Confederate flag.

I understand where you are coming from...BUT...

Every one of our Founding Fathers were traitors to their country too...Great Britain.

Except for the idiot Tennessee Volunteers, every person at the Alamo was a traitor to their country: Mexico. Those "Texicans" swore allegiance to Mexico and became Mexican citizens, they were no longer U.S. citizens. The Alamo is Mexican history, not U.S. history.

Now, let's get back to reality a bit. Personally, I don't care one way or the other about the Confederate flag. My family immigrated to the U.S. in 1924. We didn't have a dog in the fight called the Civil War or with slavery. However, IMO, if the Confederate is not allowed to fly then no other flag, from any other country or "cause" (any religion, ISIS, Black Panthers, Rainbow Coalition, Gays, Martians or whatever) should be allowed to fly in the U.S. except the U.S. flag.

Lincoln didn't care, he wanted the nation mended back together whatever it took, if it kept the southerners from whining he would've let them keep their flags.

Newsflash idiot not one CSA soldier or officer was tried for treason after the Civil War.

CSA soldiers were deemed American Veterans by a Congressional Act of 1957 you don't like the flag so what it's part of that pesky 1st Amendment you seem to hold in disdain.
