if I don't take summer classes and I have a federal direct subsidized loan will they start charging me interest?
I have registered for classes in the fall but am not taking any in the summer

No. Summer classes are considered to be either a trailer to the spring semester or a header for the fall semester, not a separate semester. So, if you were enrolled in the spring, and will be enrolled again in the fall, you are considered to be continuously enrolled, just you are when you go on a winter break between the fall and spring semesters. So, your subsidized loan will not enter repayment or begin to accrue interest.
