Under the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 the definition of "semiautomatic assault weapon" included specific semi-automatic firearm models by name, and other semi-automatic firearms that possessed two or more from a set certain features:
Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines and two or more of the following:
Folding or telescoping stock
Pistol grip
Bayonet mount
Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
Grenade launcher mount
Semi-automatic pistols with detachable magazines and two or more of the following:
Magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip
Threaded barrel to attach barrel extender, flash suppressor, handgrip, or suppressor
Barrel shroud safety feature that prevents burns to the operator
Unloaded weight of 50 oz (1.4 kg) or more
A semi-automatic version of a fully automatic firearm.
Semi-automatic shotguns with two or more of the following:

The original federal assault weapon ban listed a variety of features: bayonet lugs, a threaded barrel (for attachable flash suppressors or muzzle brakes), barrel shrouds, a folding stock, a pistol grip, and a detachable magazine. Most of these features don't really make a rifle any more dangerous, they just look scary.

The 30 shot quick change clip. Semi or full auto doesn't make any difference. You can still shoot 100 people with a semi auto.

not sure..semi auto rifles have been around for over a century and any average machinist can make an older era machine gun easily, yes...the belt fed ones especially; not sure on why the press talks about the German made machine gun that had the selector switch, they must want a nazi connection or something...the first semi auto rifle was successfuly invented in 1885, the first machine gun one year before that..Libby needs a history lesson

The terminology is pretty loose or tight depending on your stand.
"Assault weapon is a term used in the United States to define some types of firearms. The definition varies among regulating jurisdictions, but usually includes semi-automatic firearms with a detachable magazine and a pistol grip, and sometimes other features such as a flash suppressor or barrel shroud"
"
1994, the U.S. Justice Department said, "In general, assault weapons are semiautomatic firearms with a large magazine of ammunition that were designed and configured for rapid fire and combat use." The origin of the term has been attributed to legislators, gun control groups, the media, and the firearms industry itself It is sometimes conflated with the term "assault rifle", which refers to selective-fire military rifles that can fire in automatic and / or burst mode.
The key of course is that the definition varies, along with the laws that govern gun purchases. It's really not a technical term

It's never been called the bayonet holder. It's all been the stud or lug. And Assault Style weapons is a labeled affixed by POS Liberals. A lot of MSRs and Carbines don't have them.

No. The question is NRA malarkey.
It's essentially a schoolyard argument technique. Of course people who are sane are not likely to own 19 guns and know the little mechanical differences between them that make 19 soooooo necessary to a collection.
But they don't need to in order to know they don't think a weapon that can mow down 20 people in a matter of minutes is not for standard civilian use.

It was manufactured for the purpose of killing people.
Sport and Target rifles were not manufactured for the purpose of killing people.
