Actually, sex and lust was declared a sin by the professional clergy to further subjugate women. By being a sin, it diminished the sexual attractiveness and power of the female and gave the ruling priestly class more control over the men. With this they basically created a culture of fear and shame. It was about control.

It was a sin due to the inability of the church to keep tabs on who is doing what with who. Not knowing details about peoples' sex lives results in lack of power of the church over the individual in at least one area of their life.

The Church was all about denying peoples' pleasures so that they cannot find anything better to do than attend church and donate money. Anything pleasurable became a sin. For the clergy there is big money in sin.
