China knows it never really had a claim. It's just being convoluted because of Taiwan claims on an island in the Spratlys. The more pissed of Taiwan is, the more likely China will be as happy as punch with its escalation over the localities sovereign claims.

What disturbed China was the brinkmanship effect from the West. That has sent some of its military hardliners off on a tangent. When they calm down China will point out that they won by screwing up Taiwan's stupid claims again.

UNCLOS defines an island as: “a naturally formed area of land, surrounded by water, which is above water at high tide.” You can't just manufacture an island and expect to lay claim to the surrounding waters. China is now on the wrong side of international law and they've already announced today that they will not accept the ruling. The question now is what response is appropriate to China's aggression? A conflict with China is not ideal for anyone but history has shown that appeasement can be just as dangerous in the long term.
