What do universities gain from hiring teaching assistants?

I know that there are benefits for the Teaching assistant, such as reduced or fully paid tuition, teaching / public speaking experience.... But what do the universities gain from hiring them?

Ok, besides cheap labor, and a little less cynically, being a research or teaching assistant gives the student valuable experience that helps them get hired later. We don't hire anyone into a tenure track position who didn't spend some time as a teaching assistant and get experience teaching. The most competitive candidates have won awards for their teaching. Universities are increasingly evaluated on the types and quality of the jobs their graduates get, so anything we can do to make graduates more competitive is a good thing.

Universities receive help in the classroom without having to pay for a full-time teacher. This can help professors and teachers focus more on the work than other things.
