Is an SS-4 form necessary when an estate is insolvent?

    If the estate received a 1099-C and it triggers a filing requirement, you have to file a 1041. To file the 1041, you must have an EIN. To get the EIN, you must file an SS-4.

    It is the application for a Tax ID Number and will be needed in all cases.
