I guess it could happen, but I've not experienced it. Glass top ranges can be carefully cleaned with a razor blade if there is debris on the surface, and there are cleaning creams that will take off most residual discolorations.
Buy a pack of single edge razor blades and see if that solves your problem. If that doesn't work, call some local appliance repair stores and see if they stock a cream that will restore your cook top.
