MATH: Is -70 a rational or irrational number?

A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a quotient of two integers p and q...p/q.

All integers are rational numbers since they can be written with a denominator of 1....so here -70 can be written as -70/1 where -70 and 1 are integers.

Therefore, -70 is indeed a rational number.

-70 can be represented by the ratio -140/2 for example.

Any number that can be put in RATIO form is RATIOnal

By contrast a number such as √(2) cannot be represented by a ratio of form a/b.

That is how you know that √(2) is irrational

All integers, like -70, are RATIONAL numbers, because you can rewrite most of them as improper fractions (0 divided by any nonzero denominator is technically a proper fraction, but it is still a ratio in and of itself. I omitted this part earlier).
