How do you remember books when you read them?

I keep a notebook. I record the date I finished the book, bibliographical details, how I acquired it (e.g. borrowed/gifted/bought) and a sentence or three about the book very briefly. Those details are enough to jog my memory. I started keeping a notebook when I was 17 and realised that I couldn't remember titles and authors and often struggled to give a synopsis even for books which I was really moved by.
I've now kept notebooks for decades. It's really interesting flipping through them and picking out themes, some more enduring than others. I can see the books that shaped me. An unexpected bonus is that just seeing the titles also triggers memories of what was going on in my life when I was reading a particular book. I recommend keeping a notebook.
