Because he is not as conservative as the other Republican Senators. The American Conservative Union has given McCain, for the 33 full years he has been in Congress so far, an average approval rating of only about 81%. The average ACU approval rating of all Republican Senators is about 87%. McCain has obviously long been voting with Democrats in support of campaign finance laws (such as the one which was struck down as unconstitutional in the Citizens United decision). He has often called himself a "maverick" Republican.

He is exactly what is wrong with many Republicans, no balls to fight for what they were elected to fight for. He is a REPUBLICRAT.
