I have a 2004 grand cherokee and when running coolant sprays onto the hood and front of the engine compartment, why?
Noticed about two weeks ago. Replaced low coolant and that seemed to fix the heating issue, but a week later the problem started again. The radiator cap seems firm, but a little corroded on top. The tube seems to be in tact. It only sprays when driving long distance at high speed (relatively long, work is all highway) and usually only when the air conditioning is on.
Would it be better to replace the cap first and see if that fixes the issue or should I take it to a shop?
I replaced the cap, which was necessary after I looked into the old one. Drove the vehicle around for a bit, noticed it was getting hot again. Opened it up and I guess the better seal on the cap let me see that the radiator does have a crack I can't access. Spraying coolant. Taking it to a local shop to get it fixed seeing as I lack the tools, expertise, and I know better.

Your cap definitely not taking the pressure that's why the coolant sprays upward on your hood, it needs a replacement. Good time to check for other possible leak while you are at there.

Bad water pump
Bad radiator
If the coolant keeps getting low in the radiator you'll end up over heating the motor while you mess around h=guessing. Go get the cooling system pressure tested.

Replace the cap. These things are failing all the time. If that doesn't fix it it must be a leak. Pressure test the system cold and you may see it leak.
