Does the age of an instrument matter? Is it less quality?
Looking into buying a French horn, just found out it MAY be from the 1980 s the seller is not sure. That s thirty six years. Will it be less quality, worse sound more likely to cause me trouble in the future? Or does age not matter as long as it s a quality brand? It s a Holton French horn.

Holton makes a full line of instruments from beginner to professional level. If the model you're looking at is a pro level horn it could be significantly better than the intermediate level Holton you said you're selling. Brass instruments don't increase in value with age like a guitar or violin. Brass instruments tend to just wear out over time. What you really need to establish is the playing level (model) and condition. If it has sat in a closet unplayed for 30 years it could be a great bargain, if it has been worn out to the point it needs a lot of work I would pass on it.

If it is a quality horn, age will not matter. As long as the valves are free and responsive, and you have a good mouthpiece, a good horn would last for 100's of years, theorectically.
You see a lot of jazz musicians using old, dull, beat up saxophones and stuff, that are 70- 100 years old.
