Equal pay for unequal work? Is it fair that 2016 US Tennis Open pays winners the same? Women only play up to 3 sets; men play up to 5 sets.?

Women get injured more easily than men do. It's as simple as that. The top women players already have a very difficult problem staying injury-free; forcing them to play best-of-five in the Grand Slam events would just make injury-problems worse.

The men play best-of-three-sets in all the ATP events and everything else, except Davis Cup and the four majors. They are happy to do this, because they have their own injury problems to contend with.

Pro tennis players are not paid by the hours on court or the number of sets they play. They are paid for WINNING. When they lose, they do not expect to be paid anymore than the loser's share of the overall purse. This is very different from team-sport athletes, who have contracts and get paid a great deal regardless of how the team does in competition.

The time spent on the court is irrelevant; it could be 5 hours or 5 minutes if a player withdraws due to an injury.

    Play well, everybody :-)

  • Since when have athletes been paid according to the duration of their competitions?

No. When it comes to sports, the rule is: the larger the audience the more the money. If women have the same prize money as men, it means that they have the same numbers of spectators.

    Ha. Ha. Ha.

This has long been a bone of contention, even since it was the case that woman and men were paid the same despite playing fewer sets. If the women can get it, so be it - many things in life are not 'fair'.

It's not about how many sets are played.

It's about how many SEATS are sold.

Women tennis sell more seats than men's tennis.

So why can't women get equal pay?
