Why Do Some People Think Video Games Are A Waste Of Time?

I heard that a lot in my life. My guess is : people saying that are not the gaming type. Maybe they have never played a video game in their lives and don't understand the appeal. Or maybe they tried a couple times but got bored or quickly fed up. So they discredit this type of hobby.

But I don't see why it would be more of a waste of time than watching TV for example. Or any hobby you enjoy for that matter...

Bottom line is, if you have more fun playing games than doing something else, it is not a waste of time for you.

Because too much hijacks certain parts of the brain. Videogames aren't a waste of time. Those habits can kill off your productivity in life though. Put your mind away from reality. Cause you to miss reasons why you need to do things and that leads to other things.

Videogames are great, life is a competition and only the best get the best because they had fought so hard for it.

If you are losing in life, and you like to play videogames. Odds are there is someone around you taking advantage of that fact. One day you wont even be able to play them because enough of those people show up at the same time in your life.

So if you're fine and they aren't there, you have zero people or a bunch of weak people you are actually competing with, that's fine. If you have many, play videogames if you want them to do great and have a swell time.

Just play after you get rid of the competition.

Many people believe that if you don't get a physical gain out of something, it's useless. They see you staring at a screen, mashing buttons on a game pad or keyboard, and simply not doing anything else. Not only that, but you can spend hours doing it. There isn't anything really physical that comes out of a video game, but the same can be said about books, television and movies, or music.

There are many people who will never understand that entertainment is valuable in human society. It is a necessity. People get entertainment from different things.

If anyone tells you to stop wasting your time playing video games, tell them that you're not. If they ask why, tell them that you're learning more about your imagination.

Supposedly because you don't get anything productive done in that time. For example, if I am not at my job or doing schoolwork my mom will say, "You have nothing to do." So like you said, if video games are a waste of time so is listening to music, reading books, watching TV and so on. If you ask me a lot of stuff I have to do at work is a waste of time and nobody has a problem with that!

Because families...friends...children...traveling...and living life are what it's all about. Not being unemployed...at 41 living with your parents...eating chips...drinking coke and laying around all day downloading and playing games like an 18 year old. .. Go to GameStop look at the age range between 5 and 25. And parents buying games for their kids. That should tell you something right there :-). If you see someone over the age of 35 to 50... Purchasing a new game console chances are they're very lonely. And pathetic.

board game / social fun games - I don't think waste of time - rather bonding..

This is for online gaming specifically mmorpg's-

When you get tired of game, and you move on:

1. Unless you actually meet your friends, your friends will disappear,

2. You have wasted all the money (if you purchase with cash) - it adds up

3. You have wasted all the time

4. Looking back at the times you have gamed... You forgot.. what you actually did in your life time.. All you remember was.. "Oh. I think I played that for ___" - no details.... just simply 'waste of time',

Some people think video games are a waste of time, because they actually are!

99% of the people who say they don't like games don't like or understand games. Everyone has a form of entertainment that they use to entertain themselves, whether it be movies, music, television, GAMES, and reading. Every form of entertainment can consume time, but the content and the effect on you can completely determine if properly stimulates your mind intellectually or is just a waste of time: reading may be the least exciting, but it's the most intuitive; gaming may be the most interactive, but its the least fundamental. There is always something more productive to do than to play games.

So to sum up reasons, games are disliked my many because

1. They don't understand the appeal

2. There's always something better to do than gaming

Because they don't play video games. It's the same reason why you can think painting recreationally is a waste of time. Sure, it's not being productive but it makes you feel good

Because it is a waste of time, you dont know what to do, and want to pass time so you just start playing video games.
