Why do Americans pretend they are Canadian when they go abroad?

The word *some* is your friend. Use it more often.

I personally would not know why *some* Americans pretend they are Canadian when they go abroad. I've traveled to four different countries before and I didn't pretend to be anything I wasn't. I'm American.

I'm British who has never been to America and have never heard that before, although I have always wondered why I've met more Canadians than Americans in England.

I live in Europe and know lots of Americans here. None of us pretend to be Canadian.

I don't. I don't go abroad, and if I did, I would never pretend I am an idiot Canadian.

All Americans do this.

Because stereotypically Americans are ignorant patriot hippies etc and Canadians have similar accents that they can pass as and the stereotypical Canadian is better

It is safer, eh(?) Canadians are not targeted like U S citizens are (or can be).
