can you be legally separated if you do not divorce?

    Divorces can take awhile to get through the courts, and during this time people do get legally separated as required under most divorce laws. During this period you are still married, and cannot marry another, but the courts will recognize you as separated from your spouse. There are different levels of legal separation, but I won't get into that.

    Divorce is legal separation, so that's really your only option. You can remain legally married and live apart, but legally you would still be considered married.
