I assume by "connecting it to a desktop" you mean connecting to a computer using Ethernet. It is normally recommended that changes to a router's configuration, especially to WiFi settings, are done via Ethernet, but it can be done over WiFi. The problem with changing WiFi settings over WiFi is that any mistake can mean that you need to use Ethernet to recover, or reset the router back to the factory state to start reconfiguring the router from scratch.

    I hope this helps.

Depends on the provider. Some may require you have a Ethernet port so you can setup the router the way you like it.
