Why does my friend lie about stupid stuff?

I am 24 and my friend is 20, I met her at work over a year ago we have become great friends, really close outside of work too. I have noticed that she lies about the most ridiculous stuff, like stories that are clearly rubbish, I noticed this after I found out she lied to me about her age for a year... she said she was 21 and she is 20... weird lie! my mum says its because shes trying to impress me all the time but I find it weird and I question EVERYTHING she tells me now.... why is she lying.... she also said her mum has cancer this was a while back and she hasn't ever mentioned it since....

Trying to impress someone (you in this case), covering up insecurity, wanting to be liked, and getting attention are all reasons why people lie about the type of stuff your friend lies about.

What the reasons for this particular friend are only your friend can tell you. If you too really are such great friends you should be able to ask her about it. It might be a difficult conversation but you could bring it up and see what she says. You could do it gently so she doesn't feel attacked or too caught by it and make it more likely for her to give you an honest reply. That is, if you want to really know what moves her.

Maybe because you are better than her in some aspects. I have a similar friend with the same situation, I guess because it's because you might be more educated or maybe better than her in something thats why shes lying

I'm wondering why HER friend has such low friendship standards that she keeps liars as friends. BOTH of these two friends, you and her, are being weird.
