What constitutes a separation?

We'll use my state, Georgia, for this hypothetical scenario. Georgia does not require a legal separation before a divorce.

Okay, so, say a married couple has started sleeping in separate bedrooms of the house. The wife has told the husband that she no longer wants to be married, but due to financial reasons, they continue to live under the same roof. They no longer have relations together, except sharing a bank account to pay the bills.

Would this couple be considered separated? And what if one of them maybe won the lottery during this separation? Would that become a marital asset, or not?

Not living together, not sharing expenses. A legal document stating separated. go ahead and divorce, people can reverse a separation anytime.

No, they wouldn't be considered separated. They live in the same house and share a bank account.
