Teaching abroad in China: normal to email a scanned passport page?
I am trying to begin my career as an abroad teacher in China. I have a Bachelor of English, so I feel that this would be a good way of putting my degree to use.
During the application process, they seem to always ask for me to scan and send them my passport information page. Is that normal to do? It seems very...back alley. So far, I have not sent them private information like that, and I will wait until an official contract signing happens.

Is this placement through an agency? You'd want to know whether the organization arranging for your work, or the school itself, is legit.
In the US we provide a photocopy of the passport to human resources to prove we are allowed to work here. It is not enough that you show someone the passport. Every time the HR office has photocopied my passport and kept it on file.
I have even given my actual US passport to a travel agency to go get me the visa I needed. It all depends on what kind of organization you're dealing with.
So if the company is legit, then don't worry about passport scan. If the company is shady, don't apply at all!

Contact the Department of State (they issue passports) or a security agency, such as the FBI, and ask if the scans which the organization has asked you to submit could put your information at risk. They're experts on the subject and should be able to answer your question.
