The altitude and the temperature are the measure of heat, they are inversely proportional. It means the higher the altitude, the lesser the heat, or the higher the altitude, the colder it is. Places with higher altitudes for example, are mountains. When you look at the base of Mount Everest, it has no snow, but as you reach the top, it gets colder and it snows. It is because Mount Everest is tall and its altitude is high. If its altitude is high, its temperature is lower so it is cold and it snows.

A bit simplistic the other answers. But in general, with lots of exceptions, the temperature drops with increasing altitude. However, in the troposphere we frequently get so-called temperature inversions, where the temperature increases a bit with increasing altitude. And when we have the cooler air lower in an inversion we often get smog because it drops in the cooler air.

For every 1000ft elevation you go up, the temperature drops about 3 degrees F
