I have a northwestern mutual life insurance policy. How do I know if it covers suicide?

Yep, I think I can help you with that question because I work in insurance and life insurance is more of my specialty. I don't work for them, so I don't know what's in your contract. But, generally, read under the exclusions section of that policy. If you don't have the policy, check with your agent on getting a written policy with the total contract. Suicide is usually an exclusion or there's a two year waiting period for contestability. It depends on the policy and underwriting policy. I personally think suicide should have a two year waiting period because of the principle of contestability and suicide is more of a result from a medical condition. I think death from MDD should be covered since it's more like a medical condition and less like insurance fraud as long as there's a waiting period. People who are truly suicidal are not going to wait for the contestability period of two years. People in general have an infinite insurable interest in their own life so that's why, in insurance theory, people won't commit suicide for money they won't get.

More than likely has a two year exclusion. Read the policy. Might also want to reach out to a suicide hotline while you're at it. 90% of people who attempt to commit suicide and fail never try again. Some people get lucky enough to fail to get the second chance.

“The very second I let go, I knew I had made a big mistake.”

Look up "the fate of attempt survivors."

No life insurance policy covers suicide. This is to prevent someone with nothing to live for taking out a policy and then offing themselves to benefit someone else.

Read the small letter, the policy is void is you commit suicide, otherwise all suicidal people would get insurance and then suicide, that would bring the Insurance companies to bankruptcy.

Read it and find out. That is how most mysteries are solved. Probably has a 2 year waiting period.
