    Classically, it's your independent variable that you control, and your dependent variable depends on your independent variable. In a titration, you control the volume of your titrant watch what happens to the pH at each volumetric point. In spectroscopic analysis, you control the concentration and watch what happens to the Absorbance at each point, while subtly controlling the wavelength of light. In a simulation, you might control the velocity of atoms, and watch what happens to the temperature of your macro-molecule.
