USB as SSD?

I am wondering if I can boot my computer (desktop) using a USB device. More specifically, I want to use a 16GB USB Pen drive as an SSD to boot. Once the OS is loaded on the USB, the normal HDD can take over for data storage activities. The USB pen drive would strictly be for booting and program installation basic programs lie Firefox), preferably using Linux.

You can't compare a USB drive to an SSD, they are not even close to being comparable. The speed of the connection is vastly different (just an FYI).

If your desktop supports booting off USB, you can put linux on a thumbdrive and run off it. Ubuntu works great.

I mean, your best bet for SSD performance without a SSD is PuppyLinux
