Is democracy in the United States just an illusion? Do the people as a whole(on any level) hold any real power?

I'd say no, the people do have some power, but it is a representative democracy after all...we have the power to pick representatives and vote

Democracy is working. The Constitution was designed so no person or party has all the power. In our disagreements comes some for of compromise that hopefully we all can live with.

Does a hungry tiger care whether or not you are a Republican or a Democrat? Would that same tiger not eat you because you believe the color of your skin makes you superior to all other humans?

Humans have imposed countless "illusions" upon themselves - - things that aren't real acceipt in their minds - - yet they kill, denegrate, and despise each other because of these horrible things they've created and work so hard to make real.......
