Probate and state taxes?

Update:

I am probating my brother estate were he died in Washington. I live in CA and the TIN for the estate is addressed to me.

Would the estate have to pay California state tax income tax on a liquidated IRA account, because the TIN is addressed to me as the executor? Or would the fact it's being probated in the state of Washington mean any income would considered earned in Washington and no tax need to be paid? (Just Federal income tax.)

you are doing the probate in Wash where the estate existed, has nothing to do with Calif

now the IRA has a specific beneficiary who will deal with it on the basis of their status, if this heir is in Calif. and takes full distribution it is taxable to him as it would have been to the owner, the heir being a Calif resident pays that state's taxes on it

Some, far from all, states have estate or inheritance taxes. See http://taxfoundation.org/blog/does-your-state-have... to see if yours does.
