Saved excel document lost. How to recover?

I was working on an excel sheet and saved a number of times. I had just saved then excel crashed and latest saved version is nowhere to be found. It is in the recent docs of excel except when I try to open it, it says that the document does not exist. I have also noticed that where the document was saved it appears to have changed into some other file named with a bunch of letters and numbers and cannot be opened with any program. Is there anyway to recover the document which I saved?

Try opening it with notepad. If you can, and look through the file, and see some information there that looks familiar (for example data that you originally had in your sheet), then you might be able to recover it, or at least part of it.

But it will depend how you do it, comment if you want more help with this...
