Calcium hydroxide is an ionic compound which contains Ca²⁺ and OH⁻ ions in the ratio 1 : 2.

Hence, the ionic formula can be written as Ca²⁺(OH⁻)₂. Not to write the charges, the formula becomes Na(OH)₂.

Compounds containing OH⁻ ions are basic. Ca(OH)₂ is basic because it contains OH⁻ ions.
