How do I calculate work?

If I throw someone straight up into the air and within 0.3 m the person reaches 54 m/s and the person's weight is 50 kg, how do I calculate the amount of work I had to use to propel the person?

    work = force x distance

    F = ma

    To determine the work done by throwing the person up, you must first determine the total acceleration required to achieve 54 m/s in 0.3 m

    Use the motion formula

    V^2 = Vo^2 + 2ax

    V = final velocity = 54 m/s

    Vo = initial velocity = 0

    a = acceleration, which is the unknown upward acceleration of the throw minus the downward acceleration of gravity = a - 9.8

    x = displacement = 0.3 m

    54^2 = 0^2 + 2(a - 9.8) 0.3

    54^2 / 0.6 = a - 9.8 = total accel.

    54^2 / 0.6 = 4860 m/s^2

    F = 4860 * 50 kg = 243000 N

    w = 243000 * 0.3 m = 72900.0 J

    @electron is correct. My first answer was in agreement with that, but I thought it was wrong.

    The accel. of gravity must be added into the calculation…

    54^2 / 0.6 = a - 9.8

    54^2 / 0.6 + 9.8 = 4869.8 m/s^2

    F = 4869.8 * 50 kg = 243490 N

    w = 243490 * 0.3 m = 73047.0 J

    As the person is lifted 0.3 meter, the net force is the applied force minus the person’s weight.

    Weight = 50 * 9.8 = 490 N

    Let’s use the following equation to determine the person’s acceleration.

    vf^2 = vi^2 + 2 * a * d, vi = 0

    54^2 = 2 * a * 0.3

    a = 54^2 ÷ 0.6 = 4,860 m/s^2

    F = 50 * 4,860 = 243,000 N

    The total force is equal to the sum of these two forces.

    F = 243, 490 N

    Work = F * d = 243,490 * 0.3 = 73,047 N * m

    I am sorry about my mistake.
