So a larger car but you want good fuel economy and cheap road tax - they do not really go together

Guessing you are in the UK if you are concerned about road tax but think about it please - in comparison with the fuel, insurance and maintenance costs even £300 a year road tax is a very small part of the overall cost of ownership so why worry about it?

Ford Mondeo Estate and Vauxhall Insignia Estate are going to be commonly available though estates are always more sought after and more difficult to find than the equivalent saloon. Personally I would look at the Japanese and Korean alternatives first though. Sounds like you may be tempted to buy a diesel due to the better fuel economy but, remember they cost more to service, seem to pick up a lot of problems with dual mass flywheels and depollution devices and diesel costs a little more to buy again.
