They were. Rachel said, "maybe we should just take a break" in their big fight scene, right before Ross thought she meant a break from the fight and wanted to go get frozen yogurt. He didn't reply to that, but him storming off pretty much sums it up.

The REAL question is: what are the rules of a break? Are they allowed to sleep with other people? Are they still together on a break at all? This is where the argument comes from, really.

I think they should have had a contract that specifies the definition of a break.
