Where did the first prokaryotes come from?

I'm confused. I understand the protocells formed early in life and contained RNA. I also understand the eukaryotic cells developed by a prokaryote engulfing two different cells (what are now mitochondria and chloroplasts).

But how did protocells become prokaryotes?

Through the process of variation and selection.
