Is it possible to brainwash someone into forgetting about someone or multiple people they know? If so, how is it accomplished?

I'm writing a book about someone who gets kidnapped by a terrorist organization and is brainwashed. One thing they do is brainwash him into forgetting about everyone he knew prior to his capture (except those whom had been cruel to him). Is this possible? If so, how would his captors accomplish this feat?

Frontal lobotomy, electroshock therapy, heavy drugs, brain damage, or severe emotional trauma. It is possible, although highly improbable. The kidnapping of Patricia Hearst in the 70's is a good case study for what you are proposing.

Nah. That's science fiction stuff. While it isn't terribly difficult to implant false memories with drugs and hypnosis it isn't really practical to inflict precisely targeted amnesia on people.

And Yes I believe there is a special pill or therapy for hypnotism and brainwashing.

Nope. You could give him a brain injury and have them capitalize on that.
