why do people sometimes refer to suicide as harry carey?

I haven't actually heard someone refer to it as that in a long while but im curious.

    In Japan there is a ritual suicide called 'hara-kiri' or 'seppuku.'

    "Harry Carey" is mispronouncing of it, but sometimes willingly so it sounds funny.

    "Kamikaze" and "karaoke" are also notoriously mispronounced, but I don't blame anybody since they're spelled funny.

    It is Japanese and actually refers to suicide by throwing self on blades. The usual spelling is hari-kari.

    Japanese people called it hari kari.
